Okay, so we must start with the obvious elephant in the room. Jasper’s Home Brew Supply is located in the town Holly Flax was transferred to by Dunder Mifflin. Nashua, NH.
Jasper’s is a bit of an anomaly to us. They have been in business for a long time, opening their first retail location in 1981. For the online store, their traffic is a lot smaller than their bigger rivals such as More Beer or Northern Brewer.
Then there is their obvious tongue-in-cheek content sprinkled throughout the site. Heck, even the domain name, boomchuhalug, embodies their spirit. It’s cool that they enjoy what they do.
Jasper’s offers $7.99 flat rate shipping. That is a bit refreshing when others seem to offer free shipping but with constantly changing minimum totals to qualify.
Jasper’s Home Brew Supply Has a Great Overall Google Rating
With 182 reviews, they have a very solid 4.9 average rating. You can view Jasper’s Home Brew Supply Google reviews here.
Website Usability is Not as Good as Others
The website overall is not as sleek and stylish as some others. An upgrade would probably help improve the user experience and their conversions.
The layout & design looks very dated. The navigation is pretty intuitive. It took me a while to find what ingredients were included in any of their recipes. The button linking to that information was not in a very intuitive position. It is also more of a tribute to the design team when the button is the same color as the theme of the site as opposed to, I don’t know, something that might stand out!
Enough marketing nerd stuff.
Pricing is a Bit Higher Than Their Bigger Rivals
Jasper’s has a lot of ingredients, recipes, and equipment. Their selection is awesome. Their pricing seems a bit higher.
We ordered an Americanized Belgian Whit beer recipe that was $10 more than a similar recipe from another online store. Like anything else, you need to consider the quality of ingredients and overall experience.
The order was fulfilled the same day that I ordered and showed up 3 days later.
One neat thing I have never seen before. They include a sheet of round stickers with the recipe name to put on the bottle caps. That sure beats my chicken scratch with a Sharpie and trying to decipher a month later what the heck I wrote.
They emphasize that their liquid malt extract (LME) is not pasteurized. The benefit they claim is that this will create a better beer. A quick check of other stores and it does seem they all sell pasteurized LME. I’ll have to do some more research. It would be fascinating to understand what exactly is the difference in the final product between the two.
The LME comes in the dreaded plastic bags. I’ll soak it in hot water but that only helps so much. Man, I have made some sticky messes trying to use my steel brew pot spoon to scrape all the malt goodness out of the bags. It’s like those friggin Mayo bottles that splatter all over, even though you know there’s enough in there for at least 2 more sandwiches!
Jasper’s also has recipes that you won’t find anywhere else. They are worth checking out.
Our Interaction with customer support was awesome!
Their customer support seems awesome. We added a note with our order with a question. We got a reply right away and traded a few emails. They were very responsive and helpful.
Overall, they seem like quality people with quality ingredients. We recommend you give them a try.
