Where’s the best place online for the homebrewer?
If you’re a homebrewer looking for an online beer supply store, it’s important to choose the right one that meets your specific needs. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to make a decision. To help you in your search, we’ve compiled a list of our top 10 online beer supply stores.
How do we evaluate the online stores? We list our 8 criteria below.
Buy Local!
I know this may seem an odd place to promote this, but support your local beer supply store if possible. I live in a metro with over 2.4 million people, and the only beer supply store is in the next county over. They used to have a satellite store in town, but they closed that a few years ago.
The local store has a retail website that looks like it is from the days of dial-up modems. I have bought ingredients from them, but the prices are high, and the delivery from online sales is abysmal.

Our 8 Criteria When Evaluating Online Beer Supply Stores for Homebrewers
Selection of Supplies
The first thing to consider is the store’s selection of supplies. A good online beer supply store should offer a wide range of brewing equipment, ingredients, and accessories. Look for a store that carries everything you need, from fermenters and brewing kits to hops, malts, yeasts, and cleaning agents. This ensures that you won’t have to hop from store to store to gather all your brewing essentials. Having a diverse selection also allows you to experiment with different ingredients and techniques.
Quality and Freshness
When it comes to brewing beer, the quality and freshness of the ingredients are crucial. Look for an online store that takes pride in sourcing high-quality supplies from reputable sources. Fresh hops and malts can significantly impact the flavor and aroma of your beer, so make sure the store pays attention to the freshness of the store’s ingredients. Reading customer reviews and ratings can give you insights into the quality of products offered by the store.
Customer Reviews and Ratings
Speaking of customer reviews, they are a valuable resource for gauging the reputation and reliability of an online beer supply store. Take the time to read through customer feedback to get an idea of the experiences other brewers have had with the store. Look for consistent positive reviews regarding product quality, customer service, and timely delivery. Keep in mind that a few negative reviews are expected for any business, but pay attention to the overall sentiment expressed by customers.
Shipping and Delivery
Consider the shipping and delivery options offered by the online beer supply store. Fast and reliable shipping is essential to ensure that your supplies arrive promptly, especially when you’re eager to start a new brewing project. Look for stores that offer nationwide or international shipping, depending on your location, and verify their shipping policies, estimated delivery times, and any associated costs. Some stores may even offer free shipping on orders above a certain amount.
Educational Resources
For beginner brewers or those looking to expand their brewing knowledge, an online store that provides educational resources can be a valuable asset. Look for stores that offer brewing guides, tutorials, videos, or even online forums where you can connect with experienced homebrewers. These resources can help you learn new techniques, troubleshoot common issues, and gain valuable insights from the brewing community.
Customer Support
Having access to reliable and knowledgeable customer support can make your brewing journey much smoother. Look for online beer supply stores that offer various ways to contact their support team, such as phone, email, or live chat. Prompt and helpful responses to your inquiries can ensure that you get the assistance you need, whether it’s regarding product recommendations, troubleshooting, or general brewing advice.
Pricing and Affordability
While price shouldn’t be the only factor in your decision, it’s essential to consider your budget when choosing an online beer supply store. Compare prices of similar products across different stores and assess whether the quality justifies the cost. Some stores may offer discounts, loyalty programs, or bundle packages that can help you save money in the long run. However, remember that quality should always be a priority over price to ensure the best brewing experience.
User-Friendly Website
Last but not least, consider the user-friendliness of the online beer supply store’s website. A well-designed and organized website makes it easy to find products, navigate through categories, read descriptions, and complete the purchasing process smoothly. Look for stores with intuitive search features, clear product images, detailed descriptions, and secure payment options. A user-friendly website enhances your shopping experience and saves you time and frustration.
By considering these factors, you’ll be better equipped to choose the right online beer supply store for your homebrewing needs. Remember that each brewer has unique preferences, so take your time to research and explore different options before making a final decision. Cheers to your brewing success!
